    Two Windows
    Chulhoon Jung

Two Windows is Chulhoon Jung’s first exhibition in Japan and the first exhibition by a Korean artist at CAGE GALLERY. There are two windows at CAGE GALLERY. Here, we consider the artist’s decision to exhibit two photographs.

The two aren’t one, neither image representing the other. The two always exist in relation to each other.
    The two are an encounter.
The two are not three, and therefore do not enclose an interior space like a triangle. Rather than forming a social space, this turns the body toward a more personal and intimate relation. (In films, a scene repeated three times signifies a pattern that continues indefinitely. By contrast, two focuses on singular, chance events and relationships rather than the laws of the world.)

    Two windows,
    two countries, slightly apart.
    Two artworks,
    two viewings.

Chulhoon is an artist who places importance on chance encounters. He believes in such encounters.
Chulhoon encountered two subjects on his way to CAGE GALLERY, which he was visiting for the first time at a friend’s recommendation.
At 2:12 p.m., he encountered a mint-colored car servicing the city.
At 2:13 p.m., he encountered a man cleaning the streets of Ebisu.
At 2:19 p.m., he finally arrived at CAGE GALLERY and encountered the two windows.
As soon as he stood before the windows, he knew he wanted to exhibit green machine and utility pants.

green machine is a photograph of a strangely shaped machine cleaning up plant leaves, taken in London after his 2024 solo exhibition themed around arboretums. (He, too, had just wrapped up his work on “leaves.”) Looking at the machine with multiple apparatus attached to it, Chulhoon thought of himself, performing different forms of labor in life. At times, a commercial photographer; at times, an art interviewer; at times, himself before his parents and friends. His role as a photographer is perhaps just one part of the many moments that make up his life. Rather than prioritizing any one aspect of himself, the artist sought to embrace his many different sides. That way of thinking was embodied in this green machine: The wish to protect myself and the many roles I inhabit. Units continually added on. Myself and our labors.

utility pants is a photograph capturing the lower body of a man encountered at a construction site in the Netherlands. The artist is often captivated by objects and people engaged in labor at construction sites that he comes across on the street. If green machine reflects the artist’s present self, utility pants holds a future self that the artist aspires to become. Rather than showing the figure’s full body, this work crops the image to show the thighs and the work pants that wrap around them. The lower body, which bears the weight of the body and is closely tied to survival, is distinguished from the upper body, which is involved in social interaction, uses tools, and serves as a means of communication. The lower body is the body’s infra-structure, performing simpler movements such as walking and enduring. He photographs the various tools hanging from the thighs, particularly the containers that hold them, and reflects on the labor and the laboring body, directing an admiring gaze toward them.

Chulhoon says that he considers these two photographs a kind of self-portrait of himself. But what the work contains is not an image of Chulhoon—that is, his face and body. Korean aesthetician Hyosil Yang once said, “Every work is the artist’s self-portrait.” Here, “every” includes works that do not depict the artist’s own image, works in which the artist’s physical touch is concealed, and even works that simply collect and exhibit the creations of others or readymade products produced by society. How can a photograph become a self-portrait? Photography is a medium that captures distant subjects through a camera, preserving the ready-made forms of the world. How can things that are not me become a self-portrait? Perhaps for the artist, photography is not a single finished image, but encompasses the entire process of forming a relationship with the subject. A trace discovered at one location leading to the next, conversations with the models before the shoot, sharing stories about life and the things on their minds, and the images shifting, moment by moment, through chance encounters along the way. In this sense, for the artist, a self-portrait is not a fixed image of the self, but something that takes shape through encounters and relationships with two or more others, an image discovered and understood only later, appearing (only) as an image of something other than the self.

The English expression “take a picture” suggests that the act of taking a photograph is closely related to the act of painting. “Take photos as though you were painting.” The artist learned this attitude from his father, who was also a photographer. To photograph as one would paint. To contemplate for a long time, and to wait until it reflects the self. Not to construct the self as the self, but to reveal it as a distanced image, and to become entangled with other subjects in the world. With constantly changing natural light rather than artificial lighting. With chance encounters rather than staged situations. With quotidian colors and tones rather than special ones. This is how the artist gathers the world and the self into a vessel. Upon that vessel, two or more lights always fall.

《Two Windows》
